PHOENIX – The City of Phoenix is mourning the loss of Officer Zane Coolidge, who was tragically shot and killed in the line of duty while responding to a call earlier this week. Interim Phoenix Police Chief Michael Sullivan announced the heartbreaking news, expressing deep sympathy for Officer Coolidge’s family and pledging full support from the department during their time of grief.
“Officer Coolidge’s family is facing unimaginable pain,” Chief Sullivan stated. “We will stand by them in their darkest hours and honor his legacy. He will always be a part of the Phoenix Police family. Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”
Officer Coolidge, a husband, father, son, and brother, was a beloved member of the Phoenix Police Department, where he served for five years. His commitment to the community was exemplified through his work as a Field Training Officer in the Mountain View Precinct, where he helped guide new officers through their early careers.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego also expressed her sorrow over the loss. “I am devastated by the tragic death of Officer Zane Coolidge, who gave his life to keep us safe. Our entire community mourns his passing, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. We will forever honor and remember his bravery and service.”
The incident occurred Tuesday evening when Officer Coolidge and Officer Matthew Haney responded to a report of a man attempting to break into a vehicle near 16th Street and McDowell. Upon approaching the suspect, the man fled and opened fire, striking both officers. Officer Haney, who was protected by his ballistic vest, was released from the hospital the next day, while Officer Coolidge succumbed to his injuries.
“This is a sad day for the City of Phoenix,” said City Manager Jeff Barton. “Officer Coolidge died a hero, selflessly sacrificing his life to protect others. Our hearts go out to his family as we mourn this loss together.”
The Phoenix Police Department and the entire city will continue to honor Officer Coolidge’s legacy, ensuring that his bravery and service are never forgotten.
