City of Phoenix Announces Finalists for Police Chief Search

Public Forum Scheduled for March 19 to Introduce Candidates

PHOENIX, AZ – The City of Phoenix has announced the finalists in its nationwide search for a new police chief, narrowing the field to four candidates.

One of the finalists, Michael Sullivan, has served as interim police chief for over two years, stepping into the role in 2022 after the departure of Jeri Williams. Sullivan has been tasked with handling police reform efforts following a 2021 Department of Justice (DOJ) investigation into alleged civil rights violations by the Phoenix Police Department.

Meet the Finalists for Phoenix Police Chief

  • Michael Sullivan – Interim Police Chief, Phoenix Police Department; previously served as Deputy Commissioner of the Baltimore Police Department and spent 24 years with the Louisville Metro Police Department (KY).

  • Ed DeCastro – Assistant Chief of Investigations at the Phoenix Police Department, where he has worked for 24 years.

  • Ed Wessing – A 29-year veteran of the Mesa Police Department.

  • Casey Jonson – Served 23 years with the Oakland, California Police Department.

Public Forum for Community Engagement

The four finalists will participate in a public forum at 5 p.m. on March 19 at the Phoenix City Council Chambers(near Second Avenue and Jefferson Street). The event will provide residents an opportunity to ask questions and hear directly from the candidates.
