Chandler, Baltimore, Washington order Taser body cameras

Scottsdale-based Taser announced that it sold more than 6,450 of its Axon body cameras to 31 law enforcement agencies across the country in the fourth quarter of 2015.

Taser makes body cameras, in-car video systems and digital evidence-management systems that are used by police and prison guards.

The cameras can provide video evidence of police encounters with motorists and criminal suspects. Political pressure has been mounting for more police departments to deploy body cameras and in-car video systems in the wake of fatal police shootings in a number of U.S. cities.

Some of the largest orders for various models of Taser’s Axon body cameras include the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department with 2,530 units and the Baltimore County Police Department with 1,455 units.

The Chandler Police Department is acquiring 160 Axon body cameras and it will use Taser’s evidence-management system for five years.

The Taser systems use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology to track the collected data.

Taser International, founded in 1993, started with its electrical weapons, which are used to subdue criminals suspects by incapacitating them with a jolt of electricity.
