Cardinals Still In Need Of Improvement

The Arizona Cardinals took a tie against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Although they broke their losing streak at home to the Seahawks after being outscored 105-34 in three years, they are still in need of improvement.

They began the season on a decidedly sluggish note, made worse by the fact that their 2016 draft class has largely been a flop and the growing list of players on injured reserve. Even the highly-praised Robert Nkemdiche has only played “15 defensive snaps, and six special teams snaps”, through the first three games of the season – the 23-21 loss to New England at home, the 40-7 win against Tampa Bay at home, and the 33-18 loss at Buffalo.

This week, however, the Cards held the Seahawks to a six-point tie in an ultra-defensive match-up, the first tie in the Seahawks’ franchise history. This certainly may seem like a win to Cardinals fans considering their team’s dismal performance earlier in the season, but not all Arizona fans thought as much. The game was not a loss for Arizona by any means. The fact of the matter is that the Cardinals have been greatly improving, ranking fifth in total yardage at 2,655 yards, according to the ESPN website, and second in the NFC West, behind the Seattle Seahawks. Yet, that does not change the fact that they lag behind 15 other teams in terms of points per game, or the fact that the Arizona kicker, Chandler Catanzaro, missed his “24-yard chip shot of a game-winning field goal bang off the left upright”—keyword being: “game-winning.”

This week, the Cardinals were able to avoid disaster, but without continued improvement in offensive efficiency and productivity, Arizona will certainly face a dangerous adversity next week in the Panthers and find themselves in a very bad spot for the post-season.
