Border Security, Water Rights, and Veteran Care Among Senator Ruben Gallego’s Key Priorities

Arizona’s First Latino Senator Outlines Goals as He Joins Influential Committees in New Congressional Session

PHOENIX — As Congress begins a new session, Senator Ruben Gallego, Arizona’s first Latino senator, has outlined his priorities for the state, emphasizing border security, water rights, veteran care, and affordable housing.

“It’s the beginning of me fighting for all working Arizonans,” Gallego said during a press conference ahead of his swearing-in. “I look forward to following through on the promises to lower costs for families, keep them safe, and protect fundamental rights.”

Committee Assignments

Gallego will serve on several committees, including Banking, Energy and Natural Resources, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and Veterans’ Affairs.

“The reason I requested those committees is they reflect what I talked about on the campaign and what I heard from Arizonans,” Gallego said. “The Homeland Security Committee is particularly important because we need more investments in border security, Border Patrol, and ICE.”

Approach to Border Security

On the topic of immigration and border security, Gallego signaled a willingness to work across party lines. While acknowledging that Arizonans want stronger border measures—including additional customs officers and, in some cases, border walls—he stressed that many do not support extreme measures such as family separations or jailing children.

“We’re not going to have a knee-jerk reaction when terms like mass deportation are used,” Gallego said, referring to a campaign promise by President-elect Donald Trump. “We will listen, assess their plans, and work collaboratively to fulfill the demands of Arizonans.”

Water Security and Native American Partnerships

Gallego highlighted water security as a pressing issue for Arizona, particularly in collaboration with the state’s 22 federally recognized tribes. He emphasized the importance of the Northeastern Arizona Water Rights Settlement Act and ensuring lower basin states receive the resources they need.

“It’s frustrating that some of these settlements remain unfinished,” he said. “This must be a top priority for both the Senate and the House.”

Advocacy for Veterans and Affordable Housing

Gallego also pledged to improve healthcare access for veterans and to develop innovative solutions for affordable housing in Arizona.

“I want to be a voice for our veterans and ensure their healthcare needs are met,” he said.

As Gallego begins his tenure, he aims to address the complex challenges facing Arizona while building bipartisan support to deliver meaningful results for his constituents.
