Phoenix, AZ – Search teams have recovered the body of Byron Garcia-Perez, a 25-year-old man who apparently drowned at Lake Pleasant over the weekend, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) announced Monday. Garcia-Perez was swimming approximately 100 feet from the shore on Sunday afternoon when witnesses reported seeing him struggling in the water.
The incident occurred near the 10-lane boat ramp on the south side of Lake Pleasant, where Garcia-Perez went under and did not resurface. MCSO Lake Patrol deputies responded to the scene around 4:45 p.m., initiating a search by boat, but were unable to locate him.
To aid in the search, MCSO deployed an underwater remote operating vehicle (ROV), which located Garcia-Perez’s body submerged in approximately 9 feet of water just before midnight.
While the investigation into the incident is ongoing, authorities do not suspect foul play. This marks the 13th drowning in a Maricopa County lake or river so far this year.
