A Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train derailment in Sun City temporarily shut down westbound lanes of U.S. 60 on Tuesday afternoon, causing major traffic disruptions across the West Valley and renewing concerns about rail safety near residential communities.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the derailment occurred around 3:30 p.m. near 113th Avenue, just ahead of evening rush hour. Westbound traffic on Grand Avenue was closed for several hours as emergency crews responded and commuters were forced to seek alternate routes.
Hazardous Materials Rail Car Reported, No Spill Confirmed
Initial reports indicated that one of the derailed rail cars was carrying hazardous materials. Officials said there were no confirmed spills, though the incident prompted heightened concern given the location and timing of the derailment. The cause remains under investigation.
Two westbound lanes of U.S. 60 were later reopened once the scene was stabilized, but traffic delays extended well beyond Sun City as congestion rippled through surrounding communities.
Derailment Renews Debate Over Proposed Wittmann Rail Hub
The derailment has refocused attention on a proposed 4,300-acre rail hub in Wittmann, a project advanced by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway that would significantly increase rail traffic in western Maricopa County.
In November, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to deny a zoning change required for the project. County officials cited concerns related to infrastructure strain, traffic congestion, and public safety.
Despite the denial, BNSF has indicated it may continue exploring options to move forward with the project.
Local Opposition Points to Safety and Traffic Risks
Kirby Anderson, a Wittmann resident and leader of local opposition to the rail hub, said Tuesday’s derailment highlights the risks residents have warned about.
“Massive traffic jams are bad enough. Thankfully, there are no indications of a hazardous materials spill,” Anderson said. “We may not be so lucky next time if BNSF somehow manages to pursue its disastrous rail hub.”
Opponents argue that increased rail activity could lead to more frequent traffic shutdowns, added strain on emergency services, and higher risk of hazardous material incidents near homes and major roadways.
West Valley Communities Could See Broader Impact
Residents in Surprise, Sun City, Sun City West, Wickenburg, and other nearby communities have expressed concern that expanded rail operations could have far-reaching impacts beyond Wittmann, affecting daily commutes and local infrastructure throughout the region.
BNSF has not announced any changes to its long-term plans following Tuesday’s derailment.
Motorists are encouraged to monitor traffic updates from ADOT as cleanup and investigative work continues.
