Bird Flu Found at Maricopa County Poultry Farm in Arizona’s Fourth Case of 2025

Routine testing detected virus early; officials say public risk remains low

PHOENIX — A fourth Maricopa County poultry farm has tested positive for avian influenza, the Arizona Department of Agriculture announced Friday.

The farm’s name was not disclosed, but state officials said the virus was discovered during routine testing before any of the birds showed symptoms. The affected poultry were not yet laying eggs.

Samples were submitted Wednesday to the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Lab and confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory.

Officials emphasized that the risk to the general public remains low. Those with direct contact with infected birds face the highest risk of exposure.

To prevent further spread, the birds at the site are being disposed of using a heat and activation process. In previous cases, carcasses were either temporarily buried or placed in certified containers and transported to landfills.

This is Arizona’s fourth reported avian flu outbreak of 2025, all occurring at Maricopa County poultry farms. The third case was confirmed just last week.
