Avondale Recognized as 2017 Playful City USA Community

Avondale, Arizona was recognized once again as a 2017 Playful City USA designation. It’s the 4th time that the city has received the nomination. Avondale is located approximately 20 miles adjacent to the Phoenix metropolitan area. Playful City USA is a program conceived by KaBOOM!, a national non-profit dedicated to giving all kids the childhood they deserve, filled with balanced and active play, so they can thrive.

Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise said: “Avondale is a family-friendly community – we strive to bring amenities to all ages throughout the city, including our youngest residents. We understand the importance of providing opportunities for play that help kids grow, learn, and stay active.”

Avondale is considered to be the epitome of a playful city due to its expansive parks, along with a vast list of programs and activities for kids including youth sports leagues, dance classes, and martial arts, as well as family oriented events offered annually such as KidFest, Tres Rios Festival, and Tale of Two Cities.

“We are thrilled to recognize City of Avondale for putting kids first. The well being of our communities starts with the well being of our kids, and play is critical for them to thrive. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all kids get the childhood they deserve filled with play,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal.

Avondale is no stranger to receiving national awards, and was previously recognized as the first Kids at Hope City and has been nationally accredited as a Gold Medal community in the previous White House administration Let’s Move! Initiative. 258 other cities also received the Playful City USA designation in 2017 for promoting safe and engaging play for kids across the United States.
