Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced that Brandon Ramos Valenzuela, 26, has been sentenced to 8.75 years in prison followed by lifetime supervised probation for a violent domestic assault that left his ex-girlfriend seriously injured and endangered her 11-year-old child.
The attack occurred in October 2023 at a home near Van Buren Street and Dysart Road in Avondale. According to investigators, the child called 911 after waking to the sound of Valenzuela yelling at her mother. When the child tried to get help, Valenzuela covered her face, making it difficult for her to breathe, before fleeing the scene.
Responding officers found the victim lying in a pool of blood with severe head injuries, including a skull fracture and multiple brain bleeds. She was transported to the hospital for treatment and later recovered.
Valenzuela was arrested and ultimately pleaded guilty to child abuse and aggravated assault with serious physical injury, both domestic violence offenses.
“This 11-year-old showed incredible courage during what could easily have been a deadly situation,” said County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “Even one act of domestic violence is one too many. As prosecutors, we have a duty to stand up for victims and make it clear that abuse has no place in our communities.”
Authorities urge anyone experiencing domestic abuse to seek help by calling or texting the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or visiting the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office Domestic Violence webpage for local resources.
