Authorities Search for Woman Accused of Abandoning Dogs in West Valley

Maricopa County investigators say nine animals were left in poor conditions near Buckeye as animal cruelty probe continues.

Law enforcement officials in the West Valley are investigating a suspected animal neglect case after nine dogs were found in what authorities describe as unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday that its Animal Crimes Unit executed a search warrant near Salome Highway and Old U.S. 80, outside Buckeye, following complaints from neighbors. The investigation centers on Gina Steffes, whom deputies are now seeking to question.

According to investigators, the dogs were allegedly kept without sufficient food, water, or proper shelter. Authorities said the animals were discovered either roaming freely on the property or confined in kennels after Steffes moved a recreational vehicle she had been living in. Officials believe she relocated the RV after learning about the inquiry, leaving the dogs behind.

Detectives have so far been unable to reach Steffes.

The case adds to a series of recent animal welfare investigations across the region, as officials continue to urge residents to report suspected neglect. Anyone with information about Steffes’ whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Animal cruelty investigations can carry serious legal consequences in Arizona, particularly when multiple animals are involved or when conditions pose a significant risk to their health and safety.
