Attorney General Mayes Launches Statewide Campaign to Combat Housing Discrimination

Public Awareness Campaign Aims to Educate Arizonans on Renters' Legal Rights and Fair Housing Practices

PHOENIX — Attorney General Kris Mayes announced the launch of a public awareness campaign today, focused on housing discrimination and renters’ rights. The campaign will feature ads in both English and Spanish across online platforms, streaming services, and radio stations throughout Arizona.

“Every Arizonan deserves fair treatment under the law when seeking housing,” said Attorney General Mayes. “Our goal is to ensure that residents are aware of their rights and can recognize illegal discrimination, while knowing the steps to take if they are victims.”

The campaign will spotlight housing practices that violate the Arizona Fair Housing Act, such as discrimination based on emotional support animals, retaliation for reporting violations, and demands for sexual favors in exchange for repairs.

Attorney General Mayes also emphasized the importance of documenting all communications and transactions with housing providers. Renters are encouraged to maintain thorough records of important documents, communications, financial transactions, and the condition of their property.

Anyone who believes they have experienced housing discrimination is urged to file a complaint with the Civil Rights Division of the Attorney General’s Office.
