Phoenix, AZ – Former President Donald Trump was the target of what the FBI describes as “an attempted assassination” at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. The incident occurred just nine weeks after Trump survived another attack on his life. Trump has since confirmed that he is safe and in good health, while authorities have a suspect in custody.
The U.S. Secret Service, stationed a few holes ahead of Trump on the course, spotted what appeared to be the muzzle of an AK-style rifle emerging from the shrubbery approximately 400 yards away. Acting swiftly, a Secret Service agent fired at the individual, causing him to drop the rifle and flee the scene in an SUV. The suspect left behind the firearm, two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro camera. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed the man was apprehended later by law enforcement in a neighboring county.
According to Martin County Sheriff William Snyder, the suspect remained calm and displayed little emotion when stopped, not questioning why he had been pulled over, even as law enforcement surrounded his vehicle with long rifles and flashing lights.
This incident follows an earlier attack on Trump in July, where he was grazed by a bullet during a rally in Pennsylvania. Since then, questions have been raised about the efficacy of Secret Service protective operations, particularly after the agency acknowledged failures during the summer assassination attempt.
In an email to supporters, Trump reassured them, stating, “There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumors get out of hand, I want you to know: I AM SAFE AND WELL! Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!”
Trump returned to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach following the incident, though it is unclear how this will affect his upcoming campaign schedule. He was set to speak about cryptocurrency on the social media platform X on Monday and was planning events in Michigan and New York later in the week.
In a message to campaign staffers, Trump’s team stressed that security is their top priority, urging vigilance during the final stretch of the campaign. Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden were briefed on the matter. Both condemned the violence, with Biden directing his team to ensure the Secret Service has all necessary resources to protect Trump.
