Attacker Sentenced to Over 32 Years for Killing Ex-Girlfriend While She Slept

Victim's Teenage Children Witness Horrific Crime and Call for Help

In a heart-wrenching case that has shaken the community, County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced that Victoriano Blas Alejo has been sentenced to over 32 years in prison for the brutal murder of his ex-girlfriend and the threat against her teenage son. This tragic incident, which took place on July 15, 2023, underscores the devastating consequences of domestic violence.

On the morning of July 15, 2023, Glendale Police received a desperate call from the victim’s two teenage children. They reported that Alejo had repeatedly stabbed their mother while she slept in the living room and had threatened one of them with a knife. Despite the teenagers’ courageous efforts to save their mother’s life by rushing her to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.

Police investigations revealed that Alejo and the victim had recently ended their relationship, and the victim had begun seeing someone new. Consumed by anger and jealousy, Alejo attacked the victim in a premeditated act of violence. “This defendant waited to attack at the precise moment when the victim couldn’t defend herself,” stated County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “While the sentence imposed won’t take away the pain of losing a loved one, it does bring justice to the family members who witnessed their mother’s murder.”

In May of this year, Alejo pleaded guilty to one count of Second-Degree Murder, a Class One Dangerous Felony and Domestic Violence offense, and one count of Aggravated Assault, a Class Three Dangerous Felony and Domestic Violence offense. The court’s sentence of over 32 years reflects the severity of Alejo’s actions and the profound impact on the victim’s family.

The sentencing brings some closure to the victim’s family, but the emotional scars left by such a traumatic event will take much longer to heal. Domestic violence continues to be a pervasive issue, with far-reaching consequences for victims and their families. This case highlights the importance of support systems and legal measures to protect those at risk.

County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized the significance of this verdict in sending a strong message against domestic violence. “Our community must stand together to support victims and hold perpetrators accountable. We must ensure that justice is served and that those affected by such heinous acts receive the support they need to rebuild their lives.”
