Arizona State University is making a major new investment in the world’s energy future, announcing the creation of the Global Institute for the Future of Energy, fueled by a $50 million gift from ASU alumnus Robert Zorich, managing partner of EnCap Investments.
The new institute will unite ASU’s Thunderbird School of Global Management and Global Futures Laboratory to advance research, education, and public dialogue on the world’s most complex energy challenges. Designed as a hub for practical and fact-based innovation, the institute will focus on developing sustainable solutions that balance technological advancement, economic growth, and human well-being.
“ASU has long been a pioneer in building bold, pragmatic solutions for the future,” Zorich said. “I was excited to fund this institute because of the university’s ability to scale its ideas and reach a global audience.”
Zorich’s philanthropic investment — one of the largest in ASU’s history — will fund an endowed chair, student scholarships and fellowships, and programming for energy-focused initiatives, including Energy Switch, a PBS program known for its expert-led discussions on the future of energy.
ASU President Michael Crow said the institute will play a vital role in preparing future leaders to navigate a rapidly changing global energy landscape.
“Energy is central to nearly every facet of our lives, and we have to prepare now for an evolving energy future,” Crow said. “Bob Zorich’s visionary investment will empower a global understanding of energy and how we can work together to create the best paths forward.”
The institute will begin by developing new academic curricula and fellowship programs before launching an executive-in-residence initiative to bring industry leaders into the classroom and community. Public programs are also planned to spark innovation and dialogue across Arizona and around the world.
Zorich’s contribution is part of ASU’s Changing Futures campaign, a global effort to drive transformative impact through education, innovation, and sustainability.
