ASU Continues to Produce Prestigious Scholars and Award Recipients

According to rankings that were released on February 19th, Arizona State University once again produced students who won the Fulbright award.

The Fulbright program was created to increase understanding between Americans and those from other countries. They provide opportunities to travel abroad to study, teach, and conduct research. There are 1,900 grants awarded every year.

The university was seventh in the Fulbright awards for public universities and twenty-third among all institutions. ASU ranked higher than many renowned universities — including the University of Virginia, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Penn State, and Ohio State.

Arizona State University has yielded 185 Fulbright finalists in the last decade. This impressive statistic has given ASU the ability to rank eighth among institutions that award PhD degrees. The institution’s number of students who have been finalists ranks higher than that of Stanford, which only sent 183 students to the Fulbright awards in the same time period.

Out of the 185 finalists, 106 students from ASU have won the award.

There are 14 students from ASU in the United States’ 2017 and 2018 international exchange program; 10 are undergraduate students and four are graduate students. Eight of the students are working as teaching assistants and six are conducting academic research. The majority of Fulbright winners are students at Barrett Honors College.

In addition to the 14 students at Fulbright, ASU has 34 students who were named semifinalists for next year’s awards.

Kyle Mox, who is the director of Lorraine W Frank Office of National Scholarships Advisement at ASU and the associate dean of Barrett Honors College, says it is not a surprise ASU continues to produce Fulbright recipients. Mox credits this to the fact that the university is a global campus and their students are dedicated to service and leadership. ASU students are encouraged by faculty and staff to do good in the world.

Arizona State University has also been increasing their status with other awards. Last year, ASU was one of four institutions to produce winners of various prestigious scholarships. These scholarships were: Marshall, Rhodes and a Churchill Scholar. Last summer, 19 students won the Gilman scholarship to study abroad.
