PHOENIX — Arizona education officials have greenlit $48 million in additional school safety funding, paving the way for schools to bolster campus security with armed officers and expand access to counselors.
This initiative comes as part of a decision to carry over unspent funds from the Arizona Department of Education’s prior budget year. The state education board approved the allocation on Monday, inviting schools statewide to apply.
Securing Campuses with Armed Officers
Superintendent Tom Horne underscored the urgency of the funding:
“Making sure schools have armed officers on campus to protect students, educators, and staff is one of my highest priorities,” Horne said in a press release. “The sad reality is that we must ensure that if an armed maniac attacks a campus, there is a trained law enforcement officer on-site to respond.”
Out of the $48 million, $39.5 million is designated to hire nearly 200 school resource or school safety officers. These officers will provide full-time coverage on campuses, with school safety officers utilizing teams to ensure comprehensive security.
Prioritizing Mental Health Support
The remaining funds—approximately $8.5 million—will be used to hire over 60 new counselors or social workers. This dual focus aligns with state requirements that funding for armed officers must also be paired with resources for mental health support.
Broad Eligibility Across Arizona Schools
Schools from every corner of the state are eligible to apply for the program, ensuring equal opportunity to enhance campus safety and student well-being.
“Of course, we cannot afford to allow this vital funding to go unused,” Horne urged. “Schools should contact the department immediately to participate in this program.”
A Step Toward Safer Schools
This latest funding initiative reflects Arizona’s commitment to addressing the dual challenges of campus safety and student mental health in an era of growing concern. With nearly 200 officers and 60 mental health professionals expected to join school communities, Arizona is prioritizing its students’ protection and support.
