Arizonans looking to begin the new year on a healthy note will have plenty of opportunities to hit the trail on Jan. 1, 2026. Arizona State Parks and Trails announced it will offer free admission and guided “First Day Hikes” at more than a dozen locations across the state, giving residents a chance to welcome the new year in the outdoors.
The annual First Day Hikes program encourages people to start the year with physical activity and time in nature. The tradition began in Massachusetts in 1992 and expanded nationwide two decades later, becoming a staple New Year’s Day offering in state parks across the country.
This year’s hikes also mark the kickoff of “Trails250,” a nationwide celebration organized by state park systems in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. Arizona’s parks will take part throughout the year, including special programming that highlights the conservation legacy of President Theodore Roosevelt, a key figure in the creation of the national park system.
In Arizona, 18 of the state’s 33 parks will participate, offering guided hikes from northern Arizona to the southern border. Participating locations include Picacho Peak near Eloy, Slide Rock and Red Rock state parks in Sedona, Kartchner Caverns near Benson, and Riordan Mansion State Historic Park in Flagstaff, among others. Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction and Catalina State Park in Tucson will also host free hikes, though advance registration is required for those two sites. Pets will not be allowed at the Lost Dutchman hike.
Park officials say the goal is to make the experience accessible and welcoming for people of all ages and fitness levels, whether they’re seasoned hikers or simply looking for a scenic way to start the year.
Details on specific hike times, registration requirements, and participating parks are available through Arizona State Parks and Trails at https://azstateparks.com, where visitors can also find information about other events planned throughout 2026.
