Arizona State Parks and Trails to Increase Fees Starting February 25

Entrance, Camping, and Tour Prices Adjusted to Support Park Operations

PHOENIX, AZ — Visitors to Arizona’s state parks and trails will soon see an increase in fees as the agency adjusts pricing for entrance, camping, and tour tickets starting February 25.

Why the Increase?

Arizona State Parks and Trails, which operates without taxpayer funding, announced the fee adjustments on Thursday, stating that the increases will help fund park improvements, staffing, and amenities across its 33 locations.

In a press release, the agency noted that rising visitation numbers, additional amenities, and new park openings have made it difficult to increase the number of park rangers or address deferred maintenance projects. The current backlog of maintenance and proposed improvements exceeds $135 million.

“To help us continue to provide the best customer service and keep up with our aging infrastructure, it is necessary for us to raise our rates,” Arizona Parks and Trails Director Bob Broscheid said. “Of course, spending more is never anyone’s favorite thing, but I think the public will be happy to know that the fees go directly into supporting the parks they love.”

How Will the Funds Be Used?

Revenue from the increased fees will go toward:

  • Extended park operation hours
  • New programs, including guided hikes
  • Infrastructure upgrades, such as improved restrooms, showers, ramadas, and campgrounds

Updated Fee Structure

Here’s what visitors can expect under the new pricing:

  • Annual Passes: Instead of offering separate standard ($75) and premium ($200) passes, the state will now offer a single pass with no restrictions. This pass will allow up to four adults in one vehicle to access all parks for one year.
  • Camping Fees:
    • Rustic (no hook-ups): $25 per night
    • Full hook-ups (oversized sites at Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area, Show Low): $75 per night
  • Day-Use Entry Fees: $10 to $30 per adult, varying by park and season
  • Tour Fees:
    • Kartchner Caverns State Park (Cochise County): Increasing from $23 to $30 for visitors 14 and older
    • Riordan Mansion State Historic Park (Flagstaff): Increasing from $12 to $18 for visitors 14 and older

While the price increases may not be welcome news for all visitors, officials emphasize that the additional funds will ensure Arizona’s state parks remain well-maintained and accessible for years to come.
