PHOENIX, AZ – John McLean, a Democratic candidate for the Arizona Senate in District 17, tragically died in a car crash early Friday morning in Tucson. The 68-year-old community leader and retired business owner was pronounced dead at the scene following a collision involving an alleged DUI driver, according to local authorities.
The crash occurred when 27-year-old Michael Creel allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign while driving north on Ridgeside Drive and struck McLean’s vehicle, which was traveling east on Broadway Boulevard. Creel, determined to be impaired at the time of the crash, was arrested on charges of manslaughter and aggravated DUI. He sustained minor injuries.
As of Friday afternoon, McLean trailed Republican opponent Vince Leach in the District 17 Senate race by 3,029 votes (51%-49%), according to the state’s election results page.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the McLean family for their tragic loss today,” Leach said in a statement. “John was a good man who conducted himself honorably as a candidate. My deepest condolences go out to John’s family and friends during this most difficult time.”
State Senator Justine Wadsack, whom McLean and Leach sought to replace, also expressed condolences. “John was deeply rooted in Tucson’s community, was a graduate of the University of Arizona, retired Tucson business owner, and regular volunteer with the Humane Society,” Wadsack said. “This is a travesty in every way, shape, and form. My prayers go out to everyone close to him affected by this terrible news.”
McLean was known for his dedication to the Tucson community, his advocacy for education, and his volunteer work with local organizations. His sudden passing has left a profound impact on those who knew him and worked alongside him.
