Arizona Seeks To Build Cruise Ship Port Near Mexico Border

An agreement has been recently made to establish a cruise ship port, near the Mexico-Arizona border. Governors of both Sonora Mexico, and Arizona, agree that the port will likely result in economic growth for both parties. The agreement seems to be a step toward completion, since up until now the Mexican government has appeared to be somewhat hesitant in their funding of the port. So far, they have provided about $30 of the $60 million necessary for the port’s construction.

The cruise ship port itself, which is about halfway done, is located in Sonora Mexico at Puerto Peñasco, which is frequently referred to as Rocky Point. Rocky Point is a popular resort town, that is a known to be a desirable fishing destination.

3 Hours From Phoenix
Although the port is technically in Mexico, it is only a 3 hour drive from Phoenix, and Mexican officials appear to be understanding of it serving as an American port simultaneously.

Paradise Valley, which was the setting of the Arizona-Mexico Commission Summit, served as the meeting point for Mexican and Arizona officials to reach this agreement.

Port Believed To Boost Tourism
The port will have the ability of docking ships, carrying no more than 3000 passengers. Tourism, which is already on the rise in Rocky Point, is projected to only increase after the port is fully constructed. Many Americans, Arizonans in particular, currently comprise a large majority of tourists to Rocky Point.

Officials on both sides regard the advancement as an opportunity, which will give citizens something to be proud of, producing jobs in the meantime. Both parties hope it is a win-win scenario, capable of providing an economic boost on either side of the border. The port is projected to be fully functionable around 2019.
