JUNEAU, Alaska — A 69-year-old man from Arizona died after a fall near the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska’s capital, authorities confirmed this week.
The hiker, identified as Thomas Casey, was last seen Saturday morning. Alaska State Troopers said they were alerted the following day when he failed to return. Casey had not provided details about his planned route or expected return time.
Search teams used cellphone location data to track his whereabouts and found his body around 5 p.m. Monday, near the glacier and off a trail.
Casey’s remains were sent to the state medical examiner’s office. Troopers said he had been spending the summer in Juneau.
The incident comes just weeks after a Kentucky woman visiting on a cruise ship was found dead following a hike in the mountains near downtown Juneau.
