Arizona Inmate with 20 Years Left on Sentence Mistakenly Released, Later Captured

Officials investigating how fraudulent paperwork led to erroneous release

PHOENIX — An Arizona inmate with more than 20 years remaining on his sentence was mistakenly released from prison before being captured without incident on Aug. 20, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (ADCRR).

David Cramer was freed from the Lewis Complex in Buckeye after fraudulent documentation was uploaded to the court docket, ADCRR said. Officials did not disclose when the erroneous release occurred.

Prison records show Cramer was not scheduled for release until 2047. He has been incarcerated since 2014 following convictions for kidnapping, resisting arrest, and endangerment.

ADCRR has referred the case to the Arizona Attorney General’s Office for prosecution and has launched an internal review to determine what went wrong. The investigation will also examine communication protocols between the agency and the state’s judicial system.

“This successful apprehension demonstrates the importance of interagency collaboration and the commitment ADCRR and local law enforcement officers have to keep the Arizona community safe,” said Director Ryan Thornell.
