Arizona Humane Society Awarded Grant to Support Senior Dog Care

Funding will aid struggling owners with veterinary costs, food, and essential supplies

PHOENIX — The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) has been selected as one of 119 animal shelters nationwide to receive a grant aimed at helping senior dogs and their caretakers. The funding comes from the Grey Muzzle Organization, which awarded grants from a pool of more than $1.57 million to shelters across the country.

Chosen from among 440 applicants, AHS will dedicate its share of the funding to its Bridge the Gap initiative, a program designed to help struggling pet owners cover the costs of veterinary care, food, temporary housing, and other pet essentials for senior dogs.

“This grant will provide much-needed veterinary and dental care for sweet seniors,” said Dr. Steven Hansen, AHS president and CEO. “This partnership helps us ensure that struggling pet parents have the resources to keep their beloved senior pets in their homes where they belong.”

Making a difference for older pets

One example is Max, a 9-year-old Labrador Retriever who was recently hit by a car. With support from the grant, the costs of his X-rays and follow-up appointments were covered, allowing his owner to afford treatment for his injuries.

Denise Fleck, executive director of the Grey Muzzle Organization, said the funding extends beyond veterinary services, covering adoption fees and even hospice care. “These resources give thousands of older dogs a second chance to shine,” Fleck said.

Free adoptions this weekend

In addition to the grant announcement, AHS is holding a free adoption event this weekend at all three of its Valley campuses. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, adoption fees will be waived for all pets, including large dogs over 50 pounds.

All adoptable animals are spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and come with a free veterinary exam voucher.
