PHOENIX, Ariz. — In a powerful tribute to one of Arizona’s most revered statesmen, Governor Katie Hobbs has officially declared August 25–31, 2024, as John McCain Democracy Week. This proclamation not only coincides with what would have been Senator John McCain’s 88th birthday on August 29, but also marks the six-year anniversary of his passing on August 25, 2018. The week-long observance is a celebration of McCain’s enduring legacy, his unwavering commitment to democracy, and his lifelong dedication to defending freedom and human rights both in the United States and around the globe.
“John McCain’s bold and steadfast defense of our democracy and freedoms at home and abroad is a shining example of what it means to be an Arizonan,” Governor Hobbs stated. “His legacy is woven into the fabric of our state’s identity and continues to inspire Arizonans every single day. I am proud to honor him with this proclamation, and I know that his impact is felt deeply by every community across the state.”
Ambassador Cindy McCain, widow of the late senator, expressed her gratitude for the recognition. “I am grateful to Governor Hobbs for recognizing John and his legacy with this proclamation. John dedicated his life to serving America and the values of democracy, freedom, and human dignity. By recognizing John McCain Democracy Week, I am hopeful that Arizona and the world will be reminded of his service, civility, and belief in American greatness.”
The McCain Institute, dedicated to advancing the values and legacy of the McCain family, also voiced their support for the proclamation. Dr. Evelyn Farkas, Executive Director of the McCain Institute, stated, “We hope that John McCain Democracy Week inspires Arizonans and all Americans to serve a cause greater than themselves, just as Senator McCain did, and to continue fighting for democracy at a time when it is more vulnerable than ever.”
Throughout his life, Senator McCain was a champion of the core values of freedom, democracy, and human rights. From his time as a prisoner of war in Vietnam to his four-decade-long career in public service, McCain remained committed to these principles. He fought tirelessly for human rights across the globe, advocated for American leadership in international affairs, and worked across the aisle to address domestic challenges. His belief in the power of American diplomacy and military strength was unwavering, as was his commitment to serving a cause greater than himself.
John McCain Democracy Week serves as a reminder of the values that Senator McCain stood for: freedom, democracy, country over party, and American leadership on the world stage. As Arizona celebrates this week, it is an opportunity for all to reflect on McCain’s legacy and strive to continue the work he began.
