DEA event helps remove thousands of potentially dangerous pills from homes statewide

PHOENIX — Arizona residents turned in 6,257 pounds of unused or expired medications during the DEA’s 28th National Drug Take Back Day on April 26, 2025, officials announced.

The effort was part of a nationwide initiative that collected 620,000 pounds of medications across nearly 4,500 collection sites. The program aims to prevent misuse, abuse, and accidental ingestion of unused prescription drugs by offering a safe, anonymous way to dispose of them.

Since the launch of the program 16 years ago, nearly 19.8 million pounds of medications have been collected across the United States.

For those who missed the event, secure drop-off options are available year-round at nearly 17,000 pharmacies, hospitals, and police departments. To find a nearby location, visit the DEA’s “Every Day is Take Back Day” website.
