Arizona Clerk Gets 5 Years for Embezzling Over $140K from Charity and Business

Prescott woman stole funds meant for local homeless services and a construction firm

PHOENIX — A Prescott woman was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday after being convicted of embezzling more than $140,000 from an Arizona charity and a construction business.

Sheena Holmes, 38, was found guilty in April of theft over $25,000 and theft over $100,000 by a Yavapai County jury. Along with her prison term, Holmes will also serve seven years of probation, according to the Yavapai County Attorney’s Office.

Holmes first stole over $30,000 from a construction supply company during a brief stint as an accounting clerk in late 2021 and early 2022. She left the job after four months.

She was then hired by a Prescott-area charity that supports the homeless community. Investigators say Holmes embezzled over $111,000 by stealing from the organization’s thrift store, housing income, and shelter fees.

The thefts were uncovered when a new accountant at the construction firm discovered financial discrepancies. Prescott police, investigating that case, contacted the charity and uncovered the second round of theft.

Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane said the sentence sends a clear message: “Criminals who choose to do this in Yavapai County will be vigorously prosecuted.”
