APS seeks projects to meet peak energy demands

Arizona Public Service Co. has issued an “all source” request for proposals seeking projects to increase its electrical generating capacity to meet customers’ peak energy needs.

APS wants to add 400 to 600 megawatts of capacity. The proposed projects must be ready to go by June 2020.

The request for proposals is open to all technologies, including supply side and non-supply side resources. That could include reducing consumer demand for peak energy needs through education or financial incentives.

In Arizona, the peak energy demand is typically from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the hottest part of the day when business- and home-cooling systems are putting heavy demand on the electrical grid.

One megawatt generated by solar energy can serve the energy needs of close to 150 homes in Arizona, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association.

APS’ RFP process will be monitored and reviewed by a third-party independent monitor.

Phoenix-based APS serves nearly 1.2 million customers in 11 of the state’s 15 counties. It is the largest principal subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corp.
