Amazon Delivery Drones Collide with Crane in Tolleson

FAA to lead investigation after crash near West Valley fulfillment center

Two Amazon Prime Air drones crashed into a crane Wednesday morning near the company’s West Valley fulfillment center in Tolleson, authorities confirmed. No injuries were reported.

The collision occurred around 10 a.m. in the area of 96th Avenue and Roosevelt Street, just a couple of miles from the site where Amazon launches its delivery drones. Local police responded, and federal officials have since taken over the investigation.

Amazon began operating its drone delivery program in the Phoenix area last year following Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval. The service uses MK30 drones, which weigh nearly 80 pounds and are capable of transporting packages up to five pounds. Customers within designated delivery zones can request drone drop-offs for thousands of items, with small household goods—like batteries—ranking among the most frequently ordered.

Tolleson residents have become accustomed to seeing the drones in the skies as the program expands. However, this marks the first reported crash in the area since the service launched. The FAA is now examining the circumstances of the incident.
