Aldi, the German discount grocery chain known for its low prices and streamlined shopping experience, is continuing its rapid growth across the Phoenix metro area with plans for a new store in Mesa.
In mid-December, the company purchased a three-acre parcel at the southeast corner of Power and Elliot roads, on the border of Mesa and Gilbert, for $2.4 million, according to real estate data firm Vizzda LLC. The property is part of Avalon Ranch, a 14-acre mixed-use development being built by Scottsdale-based Avalon Development.
City documents show that Aldi intends to construct a 19,000-square-foot grocery store at the site. The location will join a lineup of planned tenants that includes EOS Fitness, McDonald’s, 7-Eleven, Taco Bell, and Valvoline.
Aldi’s expansion into Arizona began in 2020, when it opened its first store in the state. Since then, the Illinois-based U.S. arm of the German grocer has opened more than a dozen locations across the Valley, with additional stores in the pipeline as part of its broader push into the western United States.
The new Mesa store underscores Aldi’s growing footprint in the competitive Phoenix grocery market, where established players like Fry’s, Safeway, and WinCo have long dominated. With its no-frills model and focus on affordability, Aldi continues to attract price-conscious shoppers looking for alternatives to traditional supermarkets.
