Aeropostale closing Scottsdale Fashion Square, 2 Tucson stores

Aeropostale Inc. announced Wednesday that it plans to close 154 stores in North America, including one at Scottsdale Fashion Square and two in Tucson.

The move is part of a company reorganization that included a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

Aeropostale, a teen fashion retailer, will close its store at Tucson Foothills Mall and a separate P.S. from Aeropostale store with clothes for children ages 4 to 12.

Eleven other Arizona stores will remain open, including two each in Tempe, Glendale and Nogales, and one each in Mesa, Tucson, Yuma, Phoenix and Anthem.

The New York-based company said it expects to use the Chapter 11 process to shed or renegotiate burdensome contracts and resolve its ongoing dispute with Sycamore Partners, a leading supplier, to achieve long-term financial stability.

Julian Geiger, Aeropostale CEO, said the company will be well-positioned to compete and succeed in today’s retail environment.

“We appreciate the loyalty and support of our customers, employees and business partners as we complete this process,” Geiger said.

In conjunction with the Chapter 11 filings, Aéropostale secured a commitment for $160 million in debtor-in-possession financing provided by Crystal Financial LLC to help the company meet its financial commitments.

Aeropostale has 764 U.S. stores and 41 in Canada.
