ADOT’s Weekend Freeway Advisory: August 20-23

Freeway projects in the Phoenix area, including the new I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, will require closures this weekend (Aug. 20-23), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Drivers should plan ahead, allow extra travel time and consider alternate routes while the following weekend freeway restrictions are in place:

Westbound I-10 closed between State Route 143 (Hohokam Expressway) and Interstate 17 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday (Aug. 23) for asphalt removal and work-zone setup as part of the new I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. Westbound I-10 on-ramps at Elliot, Baseline and Broadway roads also closed. Westbound US 60(Superstition Freeway) HOV lane ramp to westbound I-10 closed. Westbound US 60 on-ramp at Mill Avenue closed. Please allow extra travel time, plan for detours and expect heavy traffic. DETOURS: Westbound I-10 traffic can detour on northbound SR 143 and westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to reach I-10 at the SR 51 “Mini-Stack” interchange near downtown Phoenix. I-10 drivers in the Chandler area also can consider using westbound/northbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) and connect with I-10 near 59th Avenue in west Phoenix. Westbound I-10 drivers in the Casa Grande area with plans to travel beyond Phoenix can consider using westbound Interstate 8 to northbound SR 85 to connect with I-10 in the West Valley/Buckeye area. Airport Access: Please allow plenty of extra travel time if traveling to Sky Harbor Airport. East Valley drivers can consider using Loop 101 to westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to reach airport exits.

Westbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) closed between Pima Road/Princess Drive and Scottsdale Road from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday(Aug. 23) for widening project. Northbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Raintree Drive and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard also closed. Allow extra travel time and expect heavy traffic. DETOUR: Alternate freeway routes from the East Valley include westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to northbound SR 51 to reach Loop 101 beyond the closure. Local traffic can consider using westbound Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard or westbound Thompson Peak Parkway to Scottsdale Road to connect with Loop 101 beyond the closure. Note: Tatum Boulevard closed in both directions at Loop 101 from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (Aug. 23). Traffic will detour on local routes, including Mayo Boulevard, 56th Street and Deer Valley Drive.


Northbound State Route 347 narrowed to one lane between Lakeview/Cobblestone Farms drives (Maricopa area) and Casa Blanca Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 10 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 21) for resurfacing. DETOUR: Please allow extra travel time and be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through work zones.

Interstate 10 narrowed to one lane in both directions overnight in areas between Watson Road and SR 85 in the Buckeye area from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights (Aug. 22-Sept. 10) for widening project. DETOUR: Please allow extra travel time and be prepared to slow down and merge safely when approaching and traveling through work zones.

Westbound State Route 24 (Gateway Freeway) ramp to Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) in Mesa closed from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 21) for construction. DETOUR: Consider using northbound Ellsworth Road to westbound Elliot Road to access westbound Loop 202.

Northern Arizona Travel Note: Interstate 40 lane restrictions should be expected this summer in the Flagstaff area for resurfacing and bridge work. I-40 narrowed to one lane in work zones. Drivers should allow extra time and consider traveling outside of peak traffic hours – including on weekends.
