Drivers on Interstate 40 east of Flagstaff should prepare for lane restrictions and delays over the coming months as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) begins a major pavement improvement project.
The work covers a 10-mile section of freeway between Meteor City Road (milepost 240) and Two Guns (milepost 230), roughly midway between Flagstaff and Winslow.
According to ADOT, crews will first replace the asphalt on the freeway shoulders before moving to the main travel lanes. The project also includes:
Replacement and installation of guardrails.
New lane striping and pavement markings.
Installation of in-pavement traffic flow detectors.
While I-40 will remain open throughout construction, ADOT said traffic may be reduced to one lane in each direction on weekdays. Motorists should budget extra travel time, especially during peak hours.
Work will continue through late November, when winter conditions will pause the project. Crews will return in spring 2026, with completion expected by next fall.
