The Arizona Department of Transportation said Wednesday it will change the way customers receive license plates, registration tabs and other documents in 2020.
Starting in January, those items will only be sent in the mail. Customers will not be able to get them at a Motor Vehicle Division location or third-party office.
“We are going to be going to a system that really recognizes the change to the way people get a lot of things … and that’s e-commerce,” said MVD spokesman Doug Nick. “So many people now get items delivered to their homes through the mail, and so this is not unusual by any means.”
Nick said the change will help the agency be more efficient and “get ahead of the curve” in fulfilling requests.
When customers renew their registration, they will receive a receipt as proof of purchase.
“Say you get pulled over for speeding or something like that, you would have that receipt … so that you can show it to law enforcement so you can say this, ‘I’m up to date on my registration renewal. The tab is on its way,’” Nick said.
For those who buy license plates, they will receive a temporary plate at the office that will have the same number as the permanent plate in the mail.
Nick said about two-thirds of the agency’s services are available online, and it plans to continue transitioning more to its website.
