PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has launched a new electronic signage system along Interstate 10 to help truck drivers find available rest area parking in real time.
The $2.8 million Truck Parking Availability System is part of a larger $13.7 million project aimed at improving safety and efficiency for truck drivers across Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas.
The new signs display the number of open parking spaces at four key rest areas along I-10:
- Ehrenberg (near the California border)
- Bouse Wash (100 miles west of Phoenix)
- Texas Canyon (70 miles east of Tucson)
- San Simon (near the New Mexico border)
In addition to the digital signs, parking availability updates can be accessed through third-party sources, allowing truck drivers to plan their stops in advance.
Why It Matters
A 2020 I-10 Corridor Coalition poll found that 78% of truck drivers spend more than 30 minutes searching for rest area parking. This system aims to reduce that time, helping drivers rest more efficiently and improving highway safety.
ADOT’s Broader Truck Parking Initiatives
ADOT is also working to expand truck parking through its Statewide Truck Parking Implementation Plan, which aims to add 842 new parking spaces across Arizona’s highways. Six of the 10 targeted locations are along I-10, including:
- Burnt Well
- B10/SR186 interchange Safe Lot
- Sacaton rest area
Since 2019, ADOT has expanded truck parking at two locations along I-40, and additional projects, including the I-10 Broadway Curve Project, are set for completion in 2025.
