88-Year-Old Woman Killed After Car Crashes Into Gilbert Senior Care Facility

Driver Arrested on Second-Degree Murder Charges; Impairment Suspected

GILBERT, AZ — A tragic crash at a senior care facility in Gilbert has claimed the life of 88-year-old Mary Haapala.

The incident occurred Friday night, just before 10 p.m., near the intersection of Lindsay and Guadalupe roads. Gilbert police responded to the American Orchards Senior Community, where a car had crashed into the building.

Haapala, who was inside the facility at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Driver Arrested After Fleeing the Scene

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Joshua Degolier, allegedly fled the scene following the crash but was later located and arrested by authorities.

Degolier is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder. Investigators believe impairment may have played a role in the crash.
