A tragedy occurred in Glendale overnight resulting in the death of an 7-year-old girl.
Authorities say the child was shot multiple times and killed while riding in a car with her mother and two others early Thursday around midnight. A younger sibling in the car was not injured.
Police said the incident occurred when the child’s mother was picking up her boyfriend around midnight near Bethany Home Road and 65th Avenue. An argument started between the boyfriend of the child’s mother as he crossed a street and someone in another vehicle leaving a parking lot.
Police report that the second car left the scene first, driving eastbound on Bethany Home Road after the exchange of words. The mother, boyfriend and the children left driving eastbound on Bethany Home Road also.
Between 65th and 55th avenues, someone in the second car shot at the woman’s car, then sped off.
The woman drove her injured daughter to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said they are not sure how many suspects were involved and have no descriptions. The suspect(s) remain at large.
Officers had been called out to the area after a call came in regarding a report of a gunshot. They found in the area a shell casing in the street.
This is an ongoing investigation. No other details were immediately available.
