5-Year-Old Girl Fatally Shot by Older Brother in Accidental Phoenix Shooting

Authorities say the child was shot with a rifle owned by her father, who was later arrested for unlawful weapon possession.

PHOENIX — A 5-year-old girl died Tuesday night after being accidentally shot by her 9-year-old brother inside their Phoenix home, according to police.

The shooting occurred at a residence near 500 W. Wier Avenue in a neighborhood close to Seventh Avenue and Broadway Road. The children’s father, 33-year-old Irvin Ramos-Jimenez, owned the rifle used in the incident.

After the girl was shot, family members drove her to a nearby behavioral hospital in the area of 1200 7th Avenue, where officers initially responded to a report of a stabbing around 9 p.m. Upon arrival, police learned the incident was actually a shooting and that the girl had been wounded in a separate location.

The child was later transported by ambulance to a trauma center, where she was pronounced dead.

Phoenix officers secured the crime scene at the family’s home, and detectives confirmed the weapon used was a rifle belonging to the father. Ramos-Jimenez was arrested on a charge of possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor.

The case remains under investigation.
