$14 million STEM High School To Open in South Phoenix

South Phoenix is getting a new high school that will focus on STEM education. The $14 million project called Maricopa Institute of Technology will open new career pathways for students and provide them with a competitive advantage with regards to college admissions.

The current project came into being when Riverside Elementary School District No. 2 partnered up with Estrella Educational Foundation. The $14 million project is being funded by community support, bonds, and business partnerships.

The Maricopa Institute of Technology high school has been designed by Orcutt Winslow and will focus on STEM education. For those of you who might not know STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. These are high compensated career paths and a lot of schools are emphasizing student growth towards such fields. Young girls are also being urged to pursue such educational and career paths.


According to Ramona Gonzales, the Headmaster of MIT, the institute will follow their motto “Excellence in Education”. Opportunities will be provided to students who show interest in advanced academics so that the bright leaders of the future can be nurtured properly. An innovative approach to education will be provided through in-depth understanding of the fundamentals present in chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics, and technology.

The Maricopa Institute of Technology is the third school in the Riverdale district; the other two being Kings Ridge Preparatory and Riverside Traditional.

Currently the Maricopa Institute of Technology will only offer classes for eight and ninth grade students coming in from all districts. The 25th of July, for the present 2016-17 school year is the first day of school for the new establishment. A grade level unit will be added each year until the high school is able to teach students from eight till twelfth grade.
