What’s old is new again, as the latest social media challenge teens are being warned against actually had its heyday before the Tide Pod challenge. The extent that children will go to for social media attention is quite alarming.

It’s called the deodorant challenge and involves spraying aerosol deodorant on someone’s skin for as long as possible. It’s dangerous and can result in severe burns, as an English teen learned last week.

Jamie Prescott explained in a Facebook post that went viral last week what happened to his daughter when she tried the challenge.

“I seldom rarely do this, but on this occasion, I would like this post spread wide and far,” Prescott wrote. “For any parents who have children, please, please sit them down and show them these pictures.”

Photos of his daughter’s arm show large blisters that may require a skin graft to fully heal. Prescott said the photos were taken three weeks after his daughter took part in the challenge.

An aerosol burn occurs when the pressurized gas within an aerosol spray can cools quickly upon exiting the can. When sprayed directly on skin for long periods of time (longer than simply applying deodorant), aerosols cause frostbite that exhibits itself as a burn.

The deodorant challenge has been around since at least 2014 and doesn’t appear to be spreading around the United States this time around.
