Tesla Gets Arizona Dealership License

Tesla Inc. will be getting a motor vehicle license for the State of Arizona after winning a court battle to gain permission to sell directly to consumers.

The motor vehicle license was granted after a Maricopa County administrative law judge said the process for blocking that type of license from the Arizona Department of Transportation actually didn’t apply to Tesla, according to the Arizona Capital Times.

Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA), known for its high-end electric cars such as the Model S and Model X, has also been fighting in several other states against similar laws prohibiting it from selling directly to consumers. The California-based company is currently battling these laws in Michigan, Connecticut, and Texas. While the company is seeking to change the status quo through the legislative process in some states, working through the courts has succeeded in Utah—and now in Arizona.

Tesla already had been operating a couple of service centers in Phoenix—one in Scottsdale Fashion Square, and one near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport—but now will be able to operate these service centers as full dealerships.

The Palo Alto-based company is ramping up production of the Powerwall and the solar roof products, as well as the first Gigafactory in Nevada, which will begin production by the end of 2017.

Tesla has sold over 150,000 units of the Model S, and the company says it does not strive to compete with the best electric cars, but rather all luxury vehicles, from Audi and BMW to Maserati and Porsche. The highly anticipated Model 3 achieves 215 miles of ranges and starts at $35,000 before incentives. Model 3 is currently under production, and will be out in late 2017.
