Should the K-12 Education Sales Tax be Renewed?

The K-12 education is the most important in a child’s life. How else will an individual be able to go to a college or university without this formal education? This is the reason why government officials with the like of Sen. Kate Brophy Mcgee support Rep. Doug Colemans legislation of extending the sales tax permanently.

The sales tax allocates nearly $550 million to the K-12 education which is good. Some people in the government believe that amount should be split, and some to cover the universities and colleges.

In the year 2000 voters were in favor of Proposition 301 which will expire in 2020. This is the reason why a party of businessmen is in support of its extension, and not only that, they want the amount to be increased by $1.5 million by 2020.

Even though Gov. Doug Ducey is in agreement with the renewal and updating of Proposition 301, he is yet to prove his support. Increasing the amount is not what Ducey wants which makes his intention and that of the businessmen community differ. Instead of the finances used in the K-12 education program to increase Ducey believes it should be decreasing and he has promised to decrease the amount every time he is elected as governor.

According to this information, there are two sides, one is supporting the increment, and the other wants the amount to decrease. Increasing the amount is a good idea, but the important thing is to first emphasize for the renewal of the program before it expires. When the program expires in 2020 before renewing it, it will take another two years for it to be implemented again. This actually means the education system will have a hard time without the funds.

In essence what the businessmen group can do at this moment is to ensure the renewal has been approved and then they can push for the increment later. This way they will have secured the program while trying to make reforms to it.

It is time for people to put their priorities right and see what will work and what will not. Protect what is the hand before you get the chance to grab another opportunity.
