Residents Can Now Provide Phoenix Police With Crime Evidence Footage

Phoenix residents will have the ability to make a difference when it comes to providing evidence with the police that was captured on their home security devices.

While the Phoenix Police Department will have occasional access to the devices, Sgt. Vince Lewis guaranteed it will not be something that will be monitored around the clock.

The police department recently announced a partnership with the Neighbors app, which is offered through Ring, a global home security company.

People with Ring devices will be able to help the cause as the free app will allow anyone to share videos, photos and other information about crime and safety with those in their neighborhood.

The app is primarily used to share information between neighbors, but the police department will also have the ability to view feeds and contact residents regarding photos or videos for a suspected crime.

While the app will play a major role, it will not be a major tool as residents will still be required to call CrimeStop or 911 if they believe a crime has taken place.

“We do not have live access to Ring or any video or devices,” Lewis said. “We have no live listening capabilities on Neighbors or (social networking service) Nextdoor.”

The content uploaded by users will be vetted by Ring before it is added to the feed and the department will then have access to the photos and videos once uploaded.

“If we need more or better quality, or the original, we can then contact the poster,” he said.

In the event that the department would like access to content regarding a possible crime, but none is available, offers will contact the resident to ask them to voluntarily review their own footage and “work it out from there.”
