Phoenix Sees Increase in Phone Scams

The Phoenix area has seen an increased amount of phone scams this summer. The scammers are attempting to frighten victims by threatening to arrest them if they do not pay a fine. The scammers try to say the victim failed to appear for jury duty or is being investigated for some other legal matter.

According to the U.S. Marshals and the FBI, the nationwide scammers are claiming to be law enforcement officers, such as courts officers and even U.S. Marshal David Gonzales of Arizona.

The fraudulent callers are telling victims they can only avoid arrest and other legal repercussions if they buy a prepaid debit card and provide the number to the caller.

A spokesperson from the U.S. Marshals Service advises that a person never provide financial information to unknown callers or entities, and that all suspicious calls should be reported to Phoenix’s U.S. Marshals Service Office.
