Phoenix Residents Asked to Give Input on Light Rain Expansion

Residents in the Phoenix area now have the opportunity to provide input regarding the newest Valley Metro light rail expansion.

Two meetings will be held this week regarding the South Central extension, and all are encouraged to attend. The first meeting will be on Wednesday, January 17th at 5:30pm at South Mountain Community Center, and the second will be on Thursday, January 18th at 5:30pm at Lowell Elementary School.

Valley Metro spokeswoman Corinne Holliday stated that the purpose of these meetings will be to give the community the opportunity to discuss with Valley Metro and the city of Phoenix the upcoming light rail expansion plans and how it can be improved.

“We’re asking the public to come out, learn more about the project and provide input,” Holliday stated. “Input is crucial.”

Specifically, Valley Metro is looking for comments regarding the design elements, including the landscape and track layout.

According to Holliday, the project is still in the initial design phase, and the plans will not be finalized until after the community has given their feedback and other elements, such as technical and safety factors, have been evaluated.

All are encouraged to attend, and those who cannot are welcome to fill out this online feedback form.

Once the design phase is finished in two years, the next aspect of the project will begin which will consists of a much larger $704 million project extending the light rail even further south to Baseline Road. It is all scheduled to be completed by 2023.
