Phoenix Police Unveil Ice Cream Truck For Public Outreach

The Phoenix Police unveiled a refreshing initiative to connect with the public: an ice cream truck. The vehicle, which was paid for through private funding of $55 thousand, with serve the purpose of both public outreach and patrol, according to the PPD.

The new vehicle was unveiled on Saturday, October 20, at Lindo Park.

“It is a little but out of the box, but it’s innovative,” said Phoenix Police Foundation President Tim Thomas.

“The van will support community outreach, neighborhood connectivity efforts, and everything that is good about ice cream is what brings folks together,” said Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams.

Courtesy Chevrolet donated the truck and AT&T donated the ice cream.

The initiative comes as part of the Phoenix Police Department’s Larger G.A.I.N. program, which stands for Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods.

“I think an important thing to remember is that we are human and also part of the community,” said PPD spokeswoman Sgt. Mercedes Fortune. “So being able to put a face to the uniform and be able to have a conversation with us is a step forward in the right direction.”
