Phoenix Mayor Race Results In A Runoff Election

The ballots are in and Councilperson Thelda Williams will remain as the interim mayor for a short time longer. The top two candidates, Kate Gallego and Daniel Valenzuela, will face off in March to fill the spot until 2020.

Former Mayor Greg Stanton Stanton resigned as Phoenix mayor in October 2017 to run for office in Congressional District 9. In the race to fill former Mayor Stanton’s seat, the special election requires 50 percent plus one vote to declare a winner.

Of the four candidates in the race, Kate Gallego took the lead in the special election for Phoenix mayor. Unfortunately, she did not receive the amount needed to win the office.

Gallego, as of Wednesday morning, received 44 percent of the vote while Daniel Valenzuela received 26 percent. Mayoral candidates Moses Sanchez secured 19 percent of the vote and Nicholas Sarwark received 11 percent.

The top two candidates, Gallego and Valenzuela are headed back out on the campaign trail and the winner will be decided in special election on March 12, 2019. The winner of this race will fill the vacancy of this term, which expires Jan. 2, 2020.
