One Movie a Day For $9.95 a Month?

There’s nothing quite like seeing a good movie in the theatres. Between the popcorn, comfy seats and surround sound, it’s typically an experience enjoyed by many. However, with ticket prices rising higher each year, it can be difficult to enjoy a movie regularly.

Lucky for frequent moviegoers, there is now a service available which allows users to see one movie a day for $9.95 a month. MoviePass provides access to 4,000 affiliated movie theatres for a monthly fee that is just slightly higher than the average movie ticket.

Founder Mitch Lowe, former president of Redbox and co-founder of Netflix, said in a statement, “MoviePass was founded to make it easier for passionate moviegoers and casual fans to see films the way they’re meant to be seen–in the theatre.”

MoviePass is also easy to use: users simply sign-up, wait for their MoviePass card to be mailed to them, and then find an affiliated theatre close by. Passholders can then see a movie by either using an e-ticket on the app or by using the MoviePass card which will be loaded with funds to pay for the ticket.

The fine print for MoviePass is minimal. According to their website, the pass can be used towards one standard 2D movie every calendar day at a participating theatre. In addition, the pass is not valid for special or enhanced screenings including 3D and IMAX.

Not everyone is happy about MoviePass, namely AMC Theatres which said in a statement, “that price level is unsustainable and only sets consumers up for ultimate disappointment down the road if or when the product can no longer be fulfilled.”

Regardless, MoviePass is a great deal, even if you don’t see a movie every single day. For the low subscription cost, users will get their money’s worth just by going to a couple movies a month. But only time will tell if this new method of purchasing movie tickets is here to stay.
