New Vehicle-Registration Fee Being Challenged By Arizona Lawmaker

After a new $32 annual public-safety fee was found to be larger than anticipated, a repeal attempt is now in the works from an Arizona state lawmaker.

A repeal bill was filed on Friday by Republican Sen.-elect Michelle Ugenti-Rita of Scottsdale for consideration during the January’s legislative session.

The fee was first approved last spring by the legislature through legislation after allowing the Arizona Department of Transportation to select the fee in order to supply additional funds for the Highway Patrol. In recent years, the Highway Patrol was funded through money collected for road work.

The fee was initially expected to be $18, but lawmakers were left surprised when the fee was announced at $32 following ADOT calculations.

Those in favor of the fee wanted to provide additional funding for road work.
