New Roles Assigned Within Arizona Supreme Court

Justice Robert M. Brutinel has been elected by the justices of the Arizona Supreme Court as their next chief justice. It was also decided that Justice Ann A. Scott Timmer will serve as vice chief justice for five-year terms, beginning on July 1.

Monday’s voting results from the seven Arizona Supreme Court justices decided that Brutinel will replace Justice Scott Bales as the chief justice, while Brutinel will be replaced by Timmer as the vice chief justice.

A former Yavapai County Superior Court judge, Brutinel appointed a justice in 2010 by then-Gov. Jan Brewer.

Timmer previously served as a state Court of Appeals judge who was appointed to the high court in 2012 by Brewer.

In 2005, Bales was appointed to the Supreme Court by then-Gov. Janet Napolitano. Before receiving his Supreme Court seat, Bales was a state solicitor general.
